The Functions of Poverty free essay sample

Merton called attention to how the political machine gave focal position to complete things when a decentralized nearby government couldn't act, refined the administrations of the unoriginal organization for dreadful residents, offered solid assistance (as opposed to extract law or equity) to poor people, and in any case performed administrations required or requested by numerous individuals yet viewed as unpredictable or even unlawful by formal open offices. Today, destitution is more insulted than the political machine at any point was; yet it, as well, is a relentless social wonder. Thus, there might be some legitimacy in applying useful examination to neediness, in asking whether it additionally has positive capacities that clarify its determination. Merton characterized capacities as those watched outcomes [of a phenomenon] which make for the adjustment or change of a given [social] framework. I will utilize a somewhat extraordinary definition; rather than recognizing capacities for a whole social framework, I will distinguish them for the intrigue gatherings, financial classes, and other populace totals with shared qualities that possess a social framework. We will compose a custom exposition test on The Functions of Poverty or then again any comparable point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page I presume that in an advanced heterogeneous society, barely any wonders are practical or useless for the general public all in all, and that most outcome in advantages to certain gatherings and expenses to other people. Nor are any marvels basic; in many examples, one can recommend what Merton calls practical other options or counterparts for them, I. e. , other social examples or strategies that accomplish a similar positive capacities yet maintain a strategic distance from the dysfunctions. Partner neediness with positive capacities appears from the outset to be unfathomable. Obviously, the slumlord and the credit shark are regularly known to benefit from the presence of neediness, yet they are seen as abhorrent men, so their exercises are arranged among the dysfunctions of destitution. In any case, what is less regularly perceived, in any event by the standard way of thinking, is that neediness additionally makes conceivable the presence or development of decent callings and occupations, for instance, penology, criminology, social work, and general wellbeing. All the more as of late, the poor have given occupations to expert and para-proficient neediness warriors, and for columnists and social researchers, this creator notwithstanding, who have provided the data requested by the recovery of open enthusiasm for destitution. Unmistakably, at that point, destitution and the poor may well fulfill various positive capacities for some nonpoor bunches in American culture. I will depict thirteen such capacities monetary, social and political that appear to me generally noteworthy. The Functions of Poverty First, the presence of neediness guarantees that societys messy work will be finished. Each general public has such work: truly grimy or hazardous, impermanent, impasse and came up short on, undignified and modest employments. Society can fill these occupations by paying higher wages than for clean work, or it can constrain individuals who have no other decision to accomplish the filthy work and at low wages. In America, neediness capacities to give a low-wage work pool that is willing or somewhat, unfit to be reluctant to perform messy work with ease. To be sure, this capacity of the poor is imperative to such an extent that in some Southern states, government assistance installments have been cut off throughout the mid year months when the poor are expected to work in the fields. In addition, a significant part of the discussion about the Negative Income Tax and the Family Assistance Plan [welfare programs] has concerned their effect on the work motivator, by which is really implied the impetus of the poor to do the required grimy work if the wages in this manner are no bigger than the salary award. Numerous monetary exercises that include messy work rely upon the poor for their reality: eateries, clinics, portions of the piece of clothing industry, and truck cultivating, among others, couldn't persevere in their current structure without poor people. Second, on the grounds that the poor are required to work at low wages, they finance an assortment of financial exercises that advantage the well-to-do. For instance, domestics sponsor the upper center and high societies, making life simpler for their bosses and liberating rich ladies for an assortment of expert, social, urban and celebrating exercises. So also, in light of the fact that the poor compensation a higher extent of their pay in property and deals charges, among others, they finance many state and nearby legislative administrations that advantage progressively princely gatherings. Likewise, the poor help development in clinical practice as patients in instructing and examination emergency clinics and as test subjects in clinical trials. Third, neediness makes employments for various occupations and callings that serve or administration poor people, or shield the remainder of society from them. As effectively noted, penology would be infinitesimal without poor people, as would the police. Different exercises and gatherings that twist in light of the presence of destitution are the numbers game, the offer of heroin and modest wines and alcohols, Pentecostal clergymen, confidence healers, whores, pawn shops, and the peacetime armed force, which selects its enrolled men predominantly from among poor people. Fourth, the poor purchase merchandise others don't need and in this way delay the financial convenience of such products day-old bread, leafy foods that in any case would need to be tossed out, used garments, and decaying vehicles and structures. They likewise give livelihoods to specialists, attorneys, instructors, and other people who are excessively old, ineffectively prepared or awkward to pull in progressively prosperous customers. Notwithstanding financial capacities, the poor play out various social capacities: Fifth, poor people can be distinguished and rebuffed as affirmed or genuine degenerates so as to maintain the authenticity of regular standards. To legitimize the attractive quality of difficult work, frugality, trustworthiness, and monogamy, for instance, the safeguards of these standards must have the option to discover individuals who can be blamed for being sluggish, prodigal, unscrupulous, and unbridled. Despite the fact that there is some proof that the poor are about as good and decent as any other person, they are more probable than middleclass offenders to be gotten and rebuffed when they take an interest in freak acts. In addition, they come up short on the political and social capacity to address the generalizations that others hold of them and therefore keep on being thought of as languid, squanderer, and so on , by the individuals who need living verification that ethical abnormality doesn't pay. 6th, and on the other hand, the poor offer vicarious support to the remainder of the populace in the uninhibited sexual, heavy drinker, and opiate conduct in which they are asserted to partake and which, being liberated from the limitations of fortune, they are frequently thought to appreciate more than the white collar classes. Hence numerous individuals, some social researchers notwithstanding, accept that the poor in addition to the fact that more are given to uninhibited conduct (which might be valid, despite the fact that it is regularly roused by despair more than by absence of hindrance) however get more delight from it than well-off individuals (which research by Lee Rainwater, Walter Miller and others demonstrates to be evidently false). Notwithstanding, regardless of whether the poor really have more sex and appreciate it more is immaterial; insofar as white collar class individuals accept this to be valid, they can take part in it vicariously when occasions are accounted for in verifiable or anecdotal structure. Seventh, the poor additionally serve a direct social capacity when culture made by or for them is received by the more rich. The rich regularly gather ancient rarities from wiped out society societies of destitute individuals; and practically all Americans tune in to the blues, Negro spirituals, and blue grass music, which began among the Southern poor. As of late they have delighted in the stone styles that were conceived, similar to the Beatles, in the ghettos, and in the most recent year, verse composed by ghetto kids has gotten famous in scholarly circles. The poor additionally fill in as culture legends, especially, obviously, to the Left; however the wanderer, the cowhand, the fashionable person, and the legendary whore with a kind nature have played out this capacity for an assortment of gatherings. Eighth, neediness assists with ensuring the status of the individuals who are not poor. In each various leveled society, somebody must be at the base; however in American culture, in which social versatility is a significant objective for some and individuals need to know where they stand, the poor capacity as a solid and generally perpetual estimating pole for status correlations. This is especially valid for the orking class, whose legislative issues is affected by the need to keep up status qualifications among themselves and poor people, much as the nobility must discover methods of separating itself from the nouveaux wealth. Ninth, the poor likewise help the upward versatility of gatherings simply above them in the class chain of im portance. Accordingly a goodly number of Americans have entered the white collar class through the benefits earned from the arrangement of products and ventures in the ghettos, including unlawful or nonrespectable ones that upperclass and upper-working class specialists avoid as a result of their low renown. Thus, individuals from pretty much every settler bunch have financed their upward portability by giving ghetto lodging, amusement, betting, opiates, and so on , to later appearances most as of late to Blacks and Puerto Ricans. Tenth, the poor assistance to keep the privileged occupied, therefore legitimizing its proceeded with presence. Society utilizes the poor as customers of repayment houses and recipients of good cause undertakings; in fact, the nobility must have the poor to show its prevalence over different elites who give themselves to acquiring cash. Eleventh, poor people, being feeble, can be made to retain he expenses of progress and development in American culture. During the nineteenth century, they accomplished the backbreaking work that fabricated the urban communities; today, they are pushed out of their neighborhoods to account for progress. Urban restoration ventures

Qualities and morals are vital to any association. What precisely do we mean by qualities and morals? Both are amazingly expansive terms, and we have to concentrate in on the viewpoints generally significant for key pioneers and chiefs. What we will initially talk about is the particular idea of morals; second, we will investigate hard working attitudes; third we will investigate key authority and dynamic; fourth we investigate the positive and negative administration atmospheres and how they impact hard working attitudes; fifth we will see the quintessence of participative administration on moral gauges in an association; 6th we will investigate the moves vital pioneers can make to construct moral atmospheres in their associations; and afterward we will draw out certain proposals before we at long last conlude. Qualities are what we, as a calling, judge to be correct. They are more than words-they are the good, moral, and expert characteristics of character †¦ Values can be characterized as those things that are critical to or esteemed by somebody. We will compose a custom article test on Vital Leadership and Decision-Making or on the other hand any comparable point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page That somebody can be an individual or, all in all, an association. One spot where esteems are significant is comparable to vision. One of the objectives for hierarchical vision is that it must be founded on and predictable with the associations guiding principle. In one case of a dream proclamation well gander at later, the associations guiding principle for this situation, honesty, polished methodology, mindful, collaboration, and stewardship-were regarded significant enough to be incorporated with the announcement of the associations vision. At the point when esteems are shared by all individuals from an association, they are exceptionally significant apparatuses for making decisions, evaluating likely results of thought about activities, and picking among options. Maybe progressively significant, they put all individuals on a similar sheet of music with respect to what all individuals as a body think about significant. Qualities are the encapsulation of what an association depend on, and ought to be the reason for the conduct of its individuals. In any case, imagine a scenario in which individuals from the association don't share and have not disguised the associations esteems. Clearly, a distinction among individual and hierarchical qualities will be useless. Moreover, an association may distribute one lot of qualities, maybe with an end goal to push forward a positive picture, while the qualities that truly direct hierarchical conduct are totally different. When there is a distinction among expressed and working qualities, it might be hard to figure out what is adequate. For instance, two of the Armys authoritative qualities incorporate genuineness and mental fortitude. One may surmise that officials are urged to have the boldness of their feelings and talk their differences straightforwardly. Now and again, this accomplishes work; in others it doesn't. Something very similar works at the degree of the general public. What does commonly viewed as right mean? That is a basic inquiry, and part of the trouble in choosing whether or not conduct is moral is in figuring out what is correct or wrong. Maybe the primary spot to glance in figuring out what is correct or wrong is society. Basically every general public makes some assurance of ethically right conduct. Social orders manage the conduct of their individuals, yet in addition characterize their cultural basic beliefs. Life, freedom, and the quest for bliss speak to center American qualities. Experience regularly has driven social orders to create convictions about what is of incentive for the benefit of everyone. (Note that social orders contrast from each other in the particulars, yet not in the general standards. ) One model is the idea of correspondence. (One great deed merits another. ) Another is the thought of good aim. (A gentlemans word is his bond. ) Yet, a third is the thought of energy about legitimacy in others paying little heed to individual sentiments. (Give the Devil his due. ) Work morals is a significant factor for the inspiration of laborers in an association. It very well may be characterized as a lot of qualities, standards and mentalities, or gauges of conduct, which manage the laborers authoritative conduct. In a similar point of view, Denga (1986) characterizes hard working attitudes as â€Å"ethical measures which manage the presentation of gathering individuals, administers their planning or preparing, and fills in as legitimate or protected and moral control. † But Iwu (1995) characterized hard working attitudes as â€Å"behavioural set of accepted rules which includes both the attractive and unwanted exercises of laborers in different occupations and affiliations. This definition shows that hard working attitudes could be certain or negative. While negative hard working attitudes which delivers such practices as delay to work, surrender of obligation, defiance, truancy, traitorousness, indiscipline, non-attendance, non-conmmitment, and so on is broken to hierarchical adequacy. Positive hard working attitudes which delivers such grandiose indications as reliability, difficult work, devotion to obligation, magnanimous help, unwaveringness, consistency in participation to work, control, collaboration, etc, is a key condition to high roductivity. Hard working attitudes takes its underlying foundations, and for sure is adapted by, the way of life of the general public wherein the work association is arranged. For the most part, an entrenched work gathering or association sets up a standard implicit rules appropriate for the association which is intended to direct the hierarchical conduct of laborers and furthermore fill in as a wellspring of solidarity inside the association. Positive hard working attitudes fills in as a wellspring of inspiration, cultivates difficult work and focuses on high profitability which eventually brings about national developoment. In as much as there is an association among morals and estimations of an association to the bigger society, the administration style and dynamic procedure of that association have the best impact on the worth arrangement of that association. In this section of this paper introduction, we will investigate how administration and dynamic influence the morals and estimations of an association. Most importantly let us help ourselves to remember who a pioneer is. A pioneer is for the most part somebody who takes care of business through individuals. This achieves another part of a pioneer: a pioneer must have a follower(s) before he/she can be known as a pioneer. A vital pioneer must have these characteristics: good faith, conclusiveness, magnetism, knowledge, cleverness and so forth. A decent pioneer must have standards and qualities that he has confidence in. Such qualities ought to pervade into the running of the association so that there will be moral principles that control the conduct of both the pioneer and his subordinates. On the off chance that these moral norms are missing, it gives an excessive amount of space to shocks, and most occasions these astonishments are terrible, useless and antagonistic to authoritative objectives. One of the capacities that a pioneer does is, dynamic. This is an exceptionally essential part of authority and it goes far to influence the worth arrangement of an association. The sort of administration style that is being worked in an association will decide the sort of dynamic procedure that an association embraces. Dynamic is the way toward picking among contending choices and making up one’s psyche on the elective that best tends to a specific circumstance.

Free Transactions How Would Work Example For Free - Free Essay Example

Nowadays, interest -free banking transaction is started getting popular and popular among many countries. The concept of interest free banking is first derived from Islamic banking. People might think that how can a bank to be survive if it does not charge any interest on the loan? But yet, there are evidences show that bank still can operate successfully based on interest free transaction for example Islamic bank. At basic, Muslims in Islamic banking are omitted from receiving or paying any kind of interest. This does not mean that the bank does not encourage any business and revenue generating activities. Interest free banking has their own principle to deal with those revenue and profit as well as business prerequisites. For example, interest free banking works out as equity financing rather than deal with debt financing. The reason is that debt financing is mainly focus on the profit interest rate. When debt financing takes place, it means that the loan given by the b ank is needed to pay back in a certain time together with interest charging but no ownership taken on business. In contrast, equity financing serves as the borrowers sell the business ownership proportion in convert for money. The main difference between debt financing and equity financing is the ownership of the lending parties towards the business. Equity financing lending parties gain ownerships while debt financing does not gain any ownership on the business. In other words, interest free bank is helping people to obtain debt in the early stage. This is the most prominent feature that interest free bank practice. The reason is because interest free bank work with their principle that the lender and borrower must engage in business relationship. Lender supposes to share the neither profit nor loss from the borrowers in business or enterprise since lender is like investors who invest money in the borrowers business according to the principle of interest free banking who share the profits and loses together. The lender and borrower are more like partner instead of debtors and creditors. By applying this principle, it can help reduce the moral hazard problems which the borrowers have incentives to engage in undesirable activities to not paying back the loan. In addition, it can also help to dilute discrimination between rich and poor. Besides that, the depositors who seek to earn some compensation for their deposits other than saving accounts are available in interest free banking. There are short term and long term investment accounts provided by interest free banking. Depositors are required to hold minimum money that is set by interest free banking for minimum of three months in short term investment banking. For those who are seek for long term investment, the depositors are require to leave the resources for at least one year. In the end, depositors will gain a small percentage return on the deposits based on annual basis according to the banks profits. U nlike commercial banks, they charge fixed interest rates on saving account. For a real case example, Swedish JAK Medlemsbank (Members Bank) is applying interest free banking principle who had earned the name of safest bank in Sweden. JAK bank provided interest free charge loan for the members. In order to provide interest free loan, the bank must also have interest free savings so that there are enough money supply to the borrowers. Since there is no interest, people are not willing to deposits their money in the bank. In order to solve the problem, JAK bank is using a system called Savings Points to balance the saving and borrowing. By using this principle, every member is required to save approximately money as they will have borrowed in order to take out the loan. Since interest free banking is normally based on Islamic banking, what is Islamic banking? Islamic banking is a bank that operates by using the principles of Islamic law (Sharia) through the Islamic economics. In my opinion, I would say that we are really needed Islamic banks. The reason is because Islamic bank is not a bank who is just borrow the loan and throw the risk burden to the entrepreneur but they also share the actual net profit or loss. Since Islamic bank is more likely like investors instead of creditors, it will give some advice that could help the borrowers business. Unlike conventional bank, they are more focus on the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans with the interest charge no matter the borrowers are having profit or lose. Besides that, Islamic bank is also operated with the consolidation of moral and ethical values based on Islamic Shariah. Those unmoral activities like casinos, pornography, alcoholic or illegal activities are prohibited in Islamic banking although such activities or services are legal or proven in some country. Since interest free banking had been universally established long time ago, different types of interest free bank might differ from thei r benefits and services provided, but they all are basically being held in agreement with the essential values of Islamic banking. In others words, Islamic banking is the head central for all the interest free banking. The differences happen is because the variety of country regulations and the customized of banks experiences and its aims as well as the needs of the residents.

Hamlet Nature and Morals Essay Example For Students

Hamlet Nature and Morals Essay Great literary works retain their popularity as a result of many different factors. One such factor which can lead to popularity of a work, current or consistent discussion of a work’s merits, can come into play when an author or playwright leaves questions unanswered in his work. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare creates such a situation. As a result of the ambiguity of clues given throughout this play, critics may argue for or against the idea that Prince Hamlet’s â€Å"antic disposition† put on as a facade to mislead the royal family pales in comparison to the disposition of Hamlet’s lunatic mind, or in other words, that Hamlet in fact truly succumbs to insanity. Evidence for this opinion can be derived from Hamlet’s erratic mood changes, careless slaughter of those not directly involved in the murder of his father, and interactions with the ghost of King Hamlet. For a man thought to be feigning insanity, Prince Hamlet seems to have very little control of his emotions. In fact, Hamlet admits this to Horatio, his confidant, when he says, â€Å"Sir, in my heart there was a kind of fighting / That would not let me sleep† (5.2. lines 4-5). This lack of restraint leads to Hamlet’s unpredictable mood swings throughout the play. Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia easily spawns such dramatic alterations in the prince’s attitude. For example, when Hamlet first suspects Ophelia acts only as the pawn for Polonius’s ploys, he reacts rashly, bitterly denying that he ever loved her. â€Å"You should not have believed me, for virtue cannot so / inoculate our old stock, but we shall relish of it. I loved / you not† (3.1.117-19). This massive reversal in disposition is later contrasted by another reversal when Hamlet leaps into Ophelia’s open grave at her funeral to dispute Laertes and claim, â€Å"I loved Oph elia, forty thousand brothers / Could not with all their quantity of love / Make up my sum† (5.1.252-54). These abrupt mood changes also appear in Hamlet’s relationship with his mother. He seemed to believe in his mother’s purity and goodness, but eventually Hamlet seems to hold a great mount of contempt for Gertrude, especially when he mocks her words, and then snidely proclaims: â€Å"You are the queen, your husband’s brother’s wife, / And would it were not so, you are my mother† (3.4.15-16). Such mood swings as these definitely prove, if anything, that Hamlet could not keep adequate control of his emotions. This lack of discipline also leads Hamlet to shamelessly murder several people not directly related to his plot to avenge his father’s death. Hamlet kills Polonius in Scene 4 of Act 3 when he becomes startled by the former’s cries for help. He the flaunts this deed n the presence of the King and Laertes. Hamlet also boasts to Horatio of his cunning plan which resulted in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern delivering their own execution notices to the English crown. Is it possible for a sane man to gloat over the death of another man by his own hand? In addition to these deaths, Hamlet can be indirectly linked to the deaths of Ophelia and Gertrude. To further this idea of Hamlet’s insanity, one can observe the prince’s interaction with the ghost of his father. For example, after Hamlet’s first interaction with this ghost, he puts forth, as Horatio calls them, â€Å"wild and whirling words.† Why right, you are in the right, And so without more circumstance at all I hold it fit that we shake hands and part, You, as your business and desire shall point you, For every man hath business and desire Such as it is, and for my own poor part, Look you, I will go pray. (1.5.127-134) Another possibility exists in relation to Act 3 Scene 4 in which Hamlet sees the ghost of his father, while Gertrude cannot see the specter. It is important to remember that in all other encounters with the ghost, Hamlet was not the only person to behold the spirit. In this scene however, Hamlet alone sees this vision. This scene reveals Hamlet’s madness at its pinnacle. .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 , .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .postImageUrl , .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 , .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:hover , .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:visited , .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:active { border:0!important; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:active , .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390 .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u012c9065a6a45c9db724c9cefb4e5390:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Tennessee Williamss Life Story EssayIn conclusion, Hamlet’s â€Å"antic disposition† can easily be understood, through examples of Hamlet’s unpredictable attitude changes, slaughter of innocents, and interactions with the ghost of his father, to be only the â€Å"tip of the iceberg† concerning his unstable mental state.

The Pursuit of Happyness Film Review Essay

The Pursuit of Happyness Film Review Essay The Pursuit of Happyness Film Review Essay Example The Pursuit of Happyness Film Review Essay Example It is widely known that public view of business is not always favorable. Rather, people treat business companies as ready for everything for the sake of profit. Therefore, society tends to approach businesses and industry with cynicism and mistrust. Media contributes a lot to that view. Most often, different movies depict such negative business aspects as preoccupation with gain, severe competition, and acceptance of unethical practices. The movie â€Å"The Pursuit of Happyness† is not an exception. It presents a business world as a competitive and quite an unfair environment. The first encounter of the protagonist of the movie with the business world reveals a fussy nature of the local business. It appears as if everybody is obsessed with his or her work. The employees seemingly have no rest. The reason is that money is the main value, and no one wants to waste it. It is clear that the employees compete with each other, and the fittest survives in business. In addition, the viewers find out more about the nature of business as the plot uncovers. When Chris decides to apply for a probation period, the viewers learn about the real essence of brokers’ company. First, the competitive motive appears during the probation period. Only one of twenty probationers can become a broker. It urges the potential workers to compete. The next competitive moment is noticeable, as well. From his manager, Chris learns that the probationers should do everything to win the clients. It means that the company welcomes all sorts of manipulations to gain profit. It looks as if the theory of utilitarianism is in action as â€Å"utilitarianism [†¦] states that actions are not good or bad in themselves, but only in so far as what they are good or bad for† (Somerville and Wood, 2008). It may be appropriate from a business perspective, but it is morally wrong. After all, the clients deserve respect not a treatment as objects of manipulation. The businesses should encourage fair cooperation among the employees and the consumers. On the other hand, the company dehumanizes its potential workers. The manager tells them that only one of competitors will become â€Å"Person.† In the business language, it means that being a person equals being a successful commercial agent. Thus, it shows an approach that only results are important. However, it is unethical to measure a value of a person in money. People should gain recognition for their good work and dedication. Money cannot buy many immaterial things. It can buy loyalty and devotion, and it does not always buy motivation. Apart from living from hand to mouth, Chris Gardner constantly feels himself inferior and underestimated. It is only he, who has to serve the manager for some reasons. The manager treats him as an errand boy. He is the one to buy coffee and doughnuts. These are the activities that some assisting personnel, like a secretary, would do. It leaves an impression that the company exploits its employees. What is more, Chris Gardner is not even an employee yet. He is just a probationer, and his direct duties are studying and acquiring first job skills. All these nuances contribute to the unethical presentation of the business world. This movie depicts businesses and market as rather unethical. This world seems to be preoccupied with gain, full of severe competition, and tolerant to unethical practices. I think this is quite an accurate depiction of business. Still, it does not show the objective picture of the business world. After all, each company has its ethical standards. Only when the personnel maintains an ethical image, they will increase their client base. Besides, organizations have to conduct their business ethically since they are role models for society at large. When the government seizes money from Gardner’s bank account for overdue taxes, it raises a controversial issue. Both government body and the character consider themselves right. In fact, they are both right from two different perspectives. On the one hand, the government is right because it acts legally. According to the laws regarding taxes, each taxpayer needs to pay his or her taxes on time. More than that, all citizens are equal before the law. Chris Gardner is no different from other taxpayers. It is clear from the letter they sent him. It looks like a standard blank with a standard text in it. Law institutions do not care if a person is able to pay taxes or not. They oblige citizens to pay them based on the local enforcements. Technically, the protagonist of the movie has to pay taxes as he has a job according to the official documentation. After all, he had signed a contract with the company manufacturing portable bone-density scanners. Therefore, even if selling these scanners is not always profitable, he has to pay taxes every month. In addition, the citizens have easy access to all the information about paying taxes. Thus, everyone knows the time limits of paying taxes and the consequences of delay. It means that Chris Gardner could also know that he was under risk of seizure. As a consequence, he is guilty in the eye of justice. At the same time, governmental approach stays in line with the theory of deontology. In terms of the idea of this phenomenon, â€Å"deontological ethics is about following universal norms that prescribe what people ought to do, how they should behave, and what is right or wrong† (Van Staveren, 2007). As a result, as long as taxpayers pay the taxes, they are considered t o be good. On the other hand, the protagonist of the movie is right, as well. From the ethical point of view, the government breaks the rules of ethical laws. First, it violates the principles of justice. It is inhumane and unfair to take the last money from the person. After all, â€Å"over and above mere human law there is an objective moral order, the ‘natural law’, which sets limits to the power of rulers† (Somerville and Wood, 2008). By seizure, the government leaves Chris with no means to exist. Thus, it looks like the government acts as a thief of someone’s money. To add even more, bank account information is private data. Private information is protected from violation under the law. Chris Gardner is the only person who can claim access to his personal bank account. Therefore, if internal revenue service takes his money, it acts unethically. Third, this governmental body does not obtain his informed consent to the seizure. It looks as if they act behind his ba ck. From the ethical perspective, they should have warned Chris about the seizure in case he would further delay the payment. What is more, Chris Gardner learns that there is nothing he can do. It means that he has no choice anymore, and so he goes bankrupt. This film is about the pursuit of happiness, not money. I can judge it from the way Chris Gardner behaves. He does not seem to be one of those mercantile people. He does not quit his job because it does not bring him profit. Besides, he does not manipulate his potential customers forcing them to buy something. The point is his unlucky career does not affect his mood at large. Even when Chris lives on the verge of poverty, it does not make him miserable. He still can see good things in life, and he is able of joking. In all his acts, the signs of care ethics are visible. His main desire is to provide for his family. His actions support, maintain, and further existing relationships, involve nurturing other people, and are reflective of empathy to those vulnerable. He recognizes that â€Å"all situations, particularly those where action must be taken, have ethical characteristics† and that â€Å"the relationship is the core values† (Hawk, 2011). That understanding motivates him to move further, not for himself, but for others. Furthermore, the character does not fall into despair as most of people would do being in his place. Above all that, he spends a lot of time with his son and teaches him not to give up using his own example. All these facts suggest that his happiness does not consist in money. His happiness is about his mindset, about his beliefs and his hope. Without the positive thinking and hope, he would truly be a miserable man. Apart from that, Chris is constantly thinking about the words of Jefferson. He dwells on the innate rights of every human being. The search of happiness is one of the basic rights, which means it does not depend on someone’s wealth. It is an inherent part of human nature. Therefore, the hero does not relate his happiness to the money he has. Meanwhile, one cannot say that happiness and money are unrelated things. Based on the plot of the film, money determines the environment in which people live. At first, the family of Gardner lives in a fine house. They have a relatively nice interior and comfort living. This environment has an influence on the emotional setting of the family. As their financial condition worsens, the number of conflicts increases. Finally, Chris’s wife Linda leaves him as she cannot stand living in debts anymore. Besides, she sees no possibilities to improve their financial position. Then, as the plot uncovers, Chris and the boy have to move to another place. Still, the money runs out. Next, they have to live in a motel, and they end up on the street. After the bankruptcy, the father and the son lose a place of living. It is clear that it disappoints the little boy, but he still believes his father is â€Å"cool.† Therefore, even when the pursuit of happiness and the pursuit of money ar e not the same, they are interrelated. Money can influence happiness but not determine its quality in general. I think the word ‘happyness’ is misspelled in the title on purpose. The author of the movie draws the viewers’ attention to the misspelled word from the beginning. The location of the word is very important. It is painted on the wall near the kindergarten in the Chinatown. It means that Chris’s happiness is located in that kindergarten. To him, happiness is to be with his son. The only thing he wants in return is trust. He constantly asks little Christopher if he trusts him. Trust stands for love to him. Even when his wife leaves, he insists on keeping the boy. In addition, one can see how important little Christopher is to the father from an episode in Church. There, the viewers may see that the father hugs the son and cries while the choir is singing about the hardships. Therefore, misspelling a word can have a hidden meaning that one may not realize at first. It encourages the viewers to reconsider their own views of happiness. Money can never buy trust, love, and happiness.

Life after university Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Life after university - Assignment Example ty to work independently on a project is essential, because there can be deadlines and targets, and often people are busy with their own tasks and not able to give constant advice. An employee should, however, also be able to work together with other colleagues and all kinds of stakeholders and clients. Fitting into the rules and styles of the organisation is essential so that work relationships run smoothly and without any conflicts. There are obvious avenues of employment in the forensic science area, which would involve a Graduate employee learning about the law and keeping up to date with protocols for genetic testing, for example, as well as working on samples and preparing reports for different context in the criminal justice system. Excellent writing skills are needed for situations where scientific analysis has to be passed on to relevant investigatory or judicial authorities. There are occasions, too, where scientific experts have to give verbal reports, and so confidence in public speaking is a useful asset. Often it is thought that the forensic science domain is all about catching criminals, but in fact much of the work is also about proving the innocence of suspects, or simply understanding more about any kind of scene, whether it be a crime scene, an archaeological dig, or any other environment. I would be interested also in some of the non-human forensic science careers, such as for example work in a laboratory for wildlife conservation which may involve testing for species diversity and habitat erosion, or working with endangered species to ensure that healthy populations are maintained. Molecular biology specialists also can choose from many careers related to medicine, for example working in the testing of drugs or increasingly in the manufacture of drugs which are tailored to the individual genetic make-up of the patient. I am interested particularly in the area of cancer research and treatment, and I think that in the next twenty years there

Developing Good Business Sense Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Developing Good Business Sense - Essay Example McDonalds is one of those organizations that are known for continuous development in their systems. Employees at McDonalds are not only involved in manufacturing of food and different aspects of operations management, they are also well-supported by automated system, hi-tech equipments and effective supply chain management system (McDonalds-UK, 2013). A critical analysis of McDonalds’ operations helped in understanding that minimum wastage, customer-oriented approach and environmental considerations are main features that govern the performance of its employees. Hence, effective cold chain, customer services and just-in time delivery by the supplier are the main features of McDonald’s operations that also govern the task performance of its employees. Like McDonalds, KFC is also supported with highly skilled labor and automation in its system. However, there is limited attention paid to materials management in terms of supplier’s selection and waste management. Wh ere McDonalds has strategic alliances to limited suppliers, KFC has a rather extensive pool of suppliers. Yearly assessment of suppliers helps in selection for the next year. Unlike KFC and McDonalds, Amazon chose to identify the top selling items and have a readily available stock of such items. It is important to note that more than warehouse management; Amazon relies on its alliances with suppliers in different regions of the world and courier services. Therefore, employees working with Amazon are more supported with IT-based interventions than the actual manufacturing processes. McDonalds and KFC use flexible operating system when it comes to operations and materials management. They have computer-aided manufacturing programs with human intervention in a supervisory role than direct involvement in production. However, as far as delivery of ready-to-cook items and real-time cooking is concerned, it is performed through their employees. Such practice helps in ensuring that a suita ble quantity of finish product is available to meet the demands of consumers without incurring actual wastages. On the other hand, Amazon focuses on small-batch production when it comes to selection of operations and materials management. The storing capacity of Amazon is rather limited and it focuses on having strategic alliances in different regions for catering customers all around the world instead of having physical facilities across the globe. Only limited items are stored based on their past selling patterns and consumers’ demands. As far as their operations and materials management costs are concerned, McDonalds and KFC incur costs in terms of raw materials purchase, plant management and basic manufacturing, labor, inventory management and distribution (Jones, 2007). All these components are inevitable to incur as these fast food chains cannot outsource manufacturing processes. On the other hand, Amazon incurs costs because of products’ purchase, warehousing an d distribution along with human resource management. Since it does not perform direct manufacturing i.e. publishing, CD burning etc, itself, therefore it purchases ready products from publishers and vendors in different regions and deliver them to customers accordingly. Main source of costs is expected to be warehousing and d

Warren Buffet Case Study Essay Example for Free

Warren Buffet Case Study Essay Executive Summary: On May 24, 2005, it was announced that Berkshire Hathaway would acquire PacifiCorp. from parent, Scottish Power, for $5.1 billion in cash and $4.3 in liabilities and preferred stock (Bruner, Eades, Schill). After the announcement of the acquisition, the market responded very positively the same day. Berkshire’s stock price had increased by 2.4%, PacifiCorp.’s parent, Scottish Power’s by 6.28% and SP 500 closed up 0.02%. Berkshire Hathaway’s 2.4% shares increase was equivalent to $2.55 billion. Since this is not consistent with results of other acquisitions of the same order, it must be Warren Buffet’s â€Å"cult†-like following that allows this to happen. Rather than rationally studying the market information of the acquisition, the general public puts their trust in Warren Buffett as an investment guru. Berkshire held many different types of industries in their portfolio, but prior to the acquisition of PacifiCorp., Berkshire did not have significant investment in the energy sector. The now more diversified investment portfolio of Berkshire after the acquisition was expected to provide more stable returns. Often throughout the case study, Buffett’s view on a company’s â€Å"intrinsic value† was spotlighted as one of his predominate investing strategies. Book value and the investment outline are the two alternatives to intrinsic value. Buffett rejects them because these alternatives neither can give clear and accurate information about the expected profit in the investment. A company’s intrinsic value, though, is a company’s value relative to the present value of its discounted future cash flows (Bruner, Eades, Schill). And this is how Buffett evaluates his investments, asking will future cash flows provide an acceptable return on investment. Problem: The primary problem in the Warren Buffett case study would be whether or not the intrinsic value of PacifiCorp. justifies Berkshire Hathaway’s bid price? Secondary problems presented include how does the PacifiCorp. acquisition stand up against Berkshire’s â€Å"elephant only† approach to investing? Thus, whether or not PacifiCorp.’s acquisition would be able to further Berkshire’s already staggering annual growth rate of 24%? Analysis: Drawing from the financial statements in the text’s exhibits, PacifiCorp.’s annual operating cash flows equaled $1.76 billion. Given this calculation, it would seem as though it would be a relatively short time before Berkshire Hathaway would accumulate enough value on the acquisition for them to receive an expedient return on their investment. â€Å"The cost of lost opportunity† is a philosophy of Warren Buffett’s that also applies to this case (Bruner, Eades, Schill). By entering into the energy market with the acquisition of PacifiCorp., the firm can hopefully continue on their incredible growth rate trend. Without it, Berkshire would likely have eventually plateaued. Recommendation: It is advised that Berkshire Hathaway follow through with the acquisition of PacifiCorp. The firm will continue to cycle large sums of cash flows through their company with this deal, therefore inducing growth and also adding intrinsic value to their firm. The firm also has a lot to gain by entering into the energy market, which already has a stronghold on American interests and adds diversity to their portfolio.

Inherit The Wind Essay -- English Literature Essays

Inherit The Wind Rachel’s Quest for independence I think Rachel was looking for the ways for her independence and willing to protect Bert during the trial. Rachel believed that Bert was innocent. Rachel was in love with Bert, she knew that Bert was not a criminal and she wanted him to confess the court and the town’s people that he had done wrong, and it was all a joke and he was sorry for that. Rachel said to Bert, â€Å"Bert, why don’t you tell `em it was all a joke? Tell `em you didn’t mean to break a law, and you won’t do it again.† This clearly shows that she was worried about him and wanted to help him. But she knew that what he had done was bad. And she was also quite sure that he would not win the trial against the mayor. Her father was a powerful man. The townspeople liked him and appreciated what he had done and was doing for them. Rachel soon found that she could not convince him to confess because he did not believe that he had done something wrong. As all he had told the pupils were the quotations from the book Hunter’s Civic Biology and from Chapter 17, Darwin’s origin of species. He learned from the books, â€Å"That man was not stuck here like a geranium in a flower pot; that living comes from a long miracle, it didn’t just happen in seven days.† All this shows that his thoughts and ideas were based on scientific facts, but her father only trusted the Bible. Rachel has been always scared of her father. When she was little she used to have bad dreams. She ...

Parenthood: Psychology and Birth Order Essay

Every family system is unique and one of the major contributing factors that determine that is birth order. There have been studies that have been conducted that suggest that your identity, character and personality can be swayed by the order you were born. In the 1989 movie Parenthood, the complexity, culture, gender issues and constant changing of family is examined. This essay will take a deeper look at two family systems from Parenthood and determine their ‘typical’ and ‘untypical’ birth order behaviors. Gil and Karen Buckman have raised their three kids in such a way that they all exhibit ‘typical’ birth order behavior. Kevin is the oldest and strives for perfection through academics and athletics; this is one of the main characteristics of being a first born. In school Kevin’s teacher informs Mr. and Mrs. Buckman that Kevin has emotional problems and too many worries for his age and suggests that a Special Ed program. The Buckman’s do not feel the need to put him into special classes, and will have him start seeing a therapist; this is because they feel he is a direct reflection on them. Kevin also plays baseball, and during the games demonstrates fear of failing. Parents often look at the first born as a second parent and this can be related back to Kevin when he says, â€Å"I have to do everything†¦Ã¢â‚¬ At the end of the film Kevin also tells his father that he wants to be just like him when he grows up; this is no surprise because Gil (also a first born) is a business executive and first borns like law, order and definite boundaries. ‘Typical’ first borns have high expectations for themselves (Kevin shows this in baseball, always beating himself up) and strive to live up to their parents expectations. Taylor is the middle child of Gil and Karen and is not shown in the movie as much as her two brothers. Middle children tend to crave attention and there in a scene in the movie where Taylor gets in trouble at school for kissing too many boys, and by doing this she will get attention from her parents. Middle children also are called ‘the forgotten child’ and in the film it seemed like the director intentionally put more emphasis Kevin and Justin rather then Taylor. At the beginning of the film Justin was the youngest child of Gil and Karen, and functioned like a ‘typical’ baby. At Kevin’s birthday party and other family events, Justin was always doing funny tricks and creating laughter among the guests. At the end of the movie, Gil and Karen had just had another baby, so as the viewer we do not know what role Justin will develop into. Gil and Karen have a ‘typical’ birth order family and that could be due to a number of contributing factors. Gil’s family growing up could be characterized as a ‘typical’ birth order family, so when he was raising his kids he could have used the same parenting techniques his parents did. The kids’ roles could also be determined by the number of years that is between all of them, there are always exceptions to the system. Helen Buckman and her ex-husband Ed raised their two kids in a way that they exhibit ‘untypical’ birth order behavior. Julie is a first born, like Kevin, but tends to act more like a middle child with her rebellious, free spirited behavior. Whether it is shaving her head, running away or getting married she is always trying to get attention out of her mom somehow. Julie does not embody the ‘typical’ first born mentality, she is not goal orientated, a high achiever or afraid of failure. Gary is the baby but is missing one of the key personality traits, entertainment. Gary can be seen as a ‘typical’ baby because he is rebellious, temperamental, and ambivalent. His rebellion can be seen when he locks his room and doesn’t let his mom know what is in his paper bag, this is probably because he is having emotional problems due to his parents divorce and does not know how to handle it. He is temperamental and ambivalent because he does what he wants, when he wants to and doesn’t seem to care. Helen, Julie, and Gary’s family dynamic could be ‘untypical’ because of the recent divorce their family went through. The person watching the movie does not know what the family was like before this event, but the kids’ attitudes could have potentially changed. Families are all different, and that is what makes them all different. Since this year I never even knew such studies existed. Learning about birth order studies has made me think about my own family, and whether we are ‘typical’ or ‘untypical’, but I know that there are always exceptions.

Malcolm X An American Muslim Minister And Human Rights...

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little and also known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, was an American Muslim minister and human rights activist. To his admirers he was a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans; disparagers accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. Malcolm X was an orphan in his early life.
